1.3 million.  That’s the population of San Antonio, Texas. It’s the price tag for a new yacht.

It’s also the number of concurrent players that are immersed in the world of Fortnite, an online sandbox survival video game developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly. The figure, reported by the PC Games website on December 8 of this year, is only a snapshot of a bigger picture. In total, the game boast over 30 million players worldwide.

The game was originally released in 2011, but it stayed in development for a unexpectedly long period time, and was released for downloads on July 25, 2017. Popularity likely soared because it is currently cost-free to download.

“It’s like a “Cartoon Call of Duty,” said senior Gabe DiVello.

In a way, it is.  The game is based on the PUBG a more realistic game. In that game you have to actually reload the gun before you try to shoot someone, where in Fortnite you can just pick up any gun and start shooting immediately if necessary.

When you play you can play with new people and talk to them.

Senior Anthony Fazio admits he gets hooked.

“I think I played from like 6:30 to 11 last night,” he said.

To make the cartoonish yet creepy feel they used works from Pixar, Tim Burton, and Looney Tunes as inspiration for the design.
