Past Becomes Present

Past+Becomes+Present

Lightly the past has been coming back. Shows, movies, and even games from the typical Gen Z childhood seem to be making new appearances in the present.

Clifford the Big Red Dog was a book series written from 1963 and so on. It also became a two season kid, mostly toddler, show that took place from 2000-2003. The story takes place from the POV of a young girl named Emily who was given a little red puppy from a “magical animal rescuer”. The next day she wakes up to find that her little puppy has transformed into a 10ft tall hound. The show goes through the life of the two while Emily’s mother was away on business and she was left in the hands of her uncle.

In 2021, a movie was released based upon the show. The plot of the movie is very similar to the show and books and it has an added villain story in which adds a conflict to make the film more action packed. The movie didn’t has the greatest reviews, having a star rating of 4.2 and 57% on rotten tomatoes, however was a great way to look back into the past. One of the movie Google reviews stated “I’m an adult and I watched it to wind down after a bad day- I always loved the original Clifford books when I was little.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s (also goes by FNAF) is a horror-themed video game having an atmosphere that can be compared to Chuck E Cheese. The first game released in 2014 and is based on the idea of live animatronics who attack the security guard in which you play as. Since then, not including the mini games and AR version, 4 other games had been released prior to Dec 2021. The last game being “Sister Location” was released in 2016. Recently, in December of 2021, a new game has been released known as “Security Breach”. Unlike previous games, this one allows you be constantly walking around and becomes more hands on rather than just sitting around or having the game move for you. Prior FNAF fans, more specifically high school students, are ecstatic to have the game back in action. Senior Erin Cunningham is exceptionally overjoyed with the current release. “In middle school I had a really heavy FNAF phase” she says, “I find that my phase is coming back in full force since Security Breach came out.”

The first movie and series known as Spider-Man came out in 2002 and features actor Tobey Maguire. This series went on until Spider-Man 3 which released in 2007. Following Spider-Manthe amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield released in 2012 and continued on into a second movie which was released in 2014. The final series, as of now, consists of three movies Spider-Man: homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: far from home (2019), and Spider-Man: no way home (2021). These cinematic pieces have Tom Holland starring in them. All 3 groups revolved around the same idea of a boy named Peter Parker who gets bitten by a spider and somehow (depending the series) becomes a super hero in a spider-like costume.

**WARNING: Spider-Man: no way home spoilers**
