On Tuesday, May 6, 2014, the Hammonton boys tennis team traveled to Millville High School to compete for the CAL Championship as an individual tournament. Our tennis team is in the running to win a Group III championship as a team. The CAL tournament had many high moments for Hammonton, but there were a few upsets.
Senior Steve Salvatore and junior Marcus Mitchell won the doubles tournament for the Devils.

“We won a close match 17-15. I had a lot of fun playing with my Marcus [Mitchell] and we were able to work together and pull in a victory,” Salvatore said.

“I was pretty excited when we won and was happy to play with Steve [Salvatore],” Mitchell said.

Senior Pete Lancetta was not able to win his match, but he knows how he can improve his game.

“I lost a match that I should of won. I wasn’t feeling like myself that day and know that if I was at my best I could of won. Hats off to my opponent who played very well though,” he said.

Senior Mike Seligman also lost a close match.

“I lost in the quarterfinals to a kid I beat last year, however, on Tuesday, the kid played better than I did. The first set of the match was really long compared to what they usually are. Whoever won that set would have the momentum and win the match and sure enough, the kid won the set and he ended up winning the match,” he said.

Senior John McCarthy also did not play up to his liking.

“It was a close, exhilarating match the didn’t go in my favor. Although I was really mad about the loss, I was able to accept it and hope to improve enough so I can win a championship,” McCarthy said.

There is a common goal for the tennis team around this time of year: a Group III Championship.
