The transition of going from one sport to another is very difficult to do. Every sport has their own unique skills and training which make them hard to adjust and adapt to.  Athletes that play multiple sports are rare. The talent and endurance needed to succeed must be high because very few athletes do it.

Playing two sports at once is hard, but to do it in the pros is very rare. There only been a few athletes in the pros to go on and play two sports. Russell Wilson is one of those athletes to do it.

Russell Wilson is the star football athlete and quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. He just won a super bowl and now on his way to be the second baseman for the Texas Rangers.

Deion Sanders, one of those athletes who excelled in both football and baseball,  gained even more fame when he hit a homeroom and scored a touchdown in the same week in 1989.

It’s extreme to do that , but if an athlete has the talent, he or she should make the most of it.

Student athletes may not be in the pros yet, but they certainly have practice juggling multiple sports throughout the school year.  Many challenges and benefits can come from the experience.

Physical Education teacher Mr. Gregg Silvesti played football, basketball and baseball and high school.  For him, each sport has its own thing to offer.

“Football’s all about being quick, strong and built because it’s a contact sport, so the workouts are a little more intense. Baseball’s more mental because the game is about technique and fundamentals. Baseball also has a lot of failure so trying to stay positive is key to the game,” he explained.

For senior Shane Guyer, who plays soccer in the fall and soccer in the sprint, the two sports challenge him in different ways.

“Soccer takes a lot more endurance and cardio to play,” he said, “but baseball you need to have more fundamentals and technique to the game to play.”

For some, the different transitions on the body and training can be difficult.

D.J Maimone, a senior, enjoys both participating in both football and baseball.

“Football is more work physically because the players have to keep in best of shape where baseball is mental and have to stay positive because your going to fail more then you succeed,” he said.

Senior Brandon Alfonso enjoys the more laid-back and fun nature of baseball compared to the intense conditioning and work that football demands of him.

Although student athletes may be able to pull it off at the high school level, many athletes lack the ability to professionally play two sports.  Russell Wilson has a gift a few other have, so fans will see how well it shows on both the football and baseball fields.
