The Race for MVP: Lebron or KD?

The Race for MVP: Lebron or KD?

It is very clear who the two best players in the NBA are this year. Lebron James and Kevin Durant have been unstoppable all year long. But who is better? Who deserves the prestigious Most Valuable Player award? As the NBA season’s end draws near more and more are asking these questions.

Both players have led their team to a playoff spot as both teams right now sit as the 2 seed (Heat in the East and Thunder in the West). Both teams as well have pretty much solidified their playoff spot at this point in the season.

Lebron and Durant have already faced off twice this year and the Thunder won the first game back in January 112-95. The second time they faced off the Heat had their way with the Thunder and had a convincing win 103-81.

Now for some stats. Durant leads the league in points averaging 32.2 points a game. Along with leading the league in scoring he averages 8 rebounds and 5.7 assists. Not far behind him Lebron averages 26.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.4 assists.

“Durant’s the MVP. He’s had 38 straight games now where he has scored 25 points or more, he leads the league in scoring, he’s just the best player in the league and deserves his first MVP,” said sophomore Josh Bevan.

Durant is about to win his fourth consecutive scoring title. He is also only the fourth player ever to average at least 32 points, 7 rebounds, and five assists for an entire season. But thats not all, he is also the first player ever since Jordan to average 33 points over a span of three months.

Russel Westbrook was injured and missed 34 games for the Thunder this year which forced Durant to pretty much carry the team. But many have overlooked the fact that Lebron has been put in pretty much the same situation since Dwayne Wade missed 28 games due to an injury.

Many still believe that Lebron deserves the title despite Durant’s numbers.

“Durant’s a great player don’t get me wrong, but he doesn’t deserve MVP. Lebron is still the best player in the league,” said sophomore Danny Speakman.

Lebron has won the title four out of the last five years. But Durant believes it is his time to shine now and hopes to start his own streak of MVP awards and more importantly his first ring.

As far as the rest of the MVP ballot, they might as well not even be on the ballot. This is a two-way race and that is very clear. But other than Durant and Lebron the other names that have came up in the discussion of MVP were Blake Griffin, Paul George, and Joakim Noah.
