What’s Next for Eagles as Quarterback Controversy Continues

Whats+Next+for+Eagles+as+Quarterback+Controversy+Continues

This season for Eagles fans did not go as expected. The Eagles finished the season with a 4-11-1 record, which was last place in their division. This is also an accomplishment because the division the Eagles are in is decent at best. The season was highlighted by a growing quarterback controversy, which was one of the only positions on the team that did not need help.

This controversy first started when the Eagles drafted quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of last year’s draft. This pick did not go over well with fans too well because there were many other positions of need the team needed and still does need. After the draft everyone seemingly forgot about the pick, until week 13 of the NFL regular season when head coach at the time Doug Pederson benched the 5 year veteran Quarterback in the third quarter of the game against the Packers. Jalen Hurts came into the game and played well, but it was too little too late in that game. The next week Hurts did just enough to get a win over the New Orleans Saints, and from that point on there has been a growing discussion around the Eagles organization on who to start and who to bench or trade away.
On one hand you have Wentz who may not be the same after his gruesome knee injury back in 2017 but still a good quarterback nonetheless. On the other hand you have a young quarterback who played better than Wentz but doesn’t have the experience that Wentz has.

So the question is who should the Eagles go with. Well based on the fact that the Eagles fired Pederson at the end of the year, it’s a safe bet that Wentz will not be an Eagle next year as well. The reason for this assumption is because the Eagles clearly want a fresh start with the hiring of Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to be their new head coach, and the Eagles can not get the fresh start they want if they still have Wentz on their roster.

Now with that question answered a new one presents itself: What to do with Carson Wentz?

The answer is trade and get the same value the Lions got for Matthew Stafford when they traded him just last week.

Just to refresh people’s minds, Stafford was dealt to the Rams for 2 first picks one being in 2022 and the other in 2023, they also gave the lions a third round pick in the upcoming draft this year, as well as Quarterback Jared Goff. Looking at all that on paper looks like a lot, and it is a lot to give up for one player.

But yet another question comes to light with this scenario: what team would be willing to give up that much for Wentz?

There’s few that fit the bill,  and a couple of dark horse teams that could get Wentz.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts just lost yet another quarterback to retirement after their season ended a little over a month ago. There have been countless rumors on what the Colts will do with such a glaring hole at quarterback. Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed that they put an offer in to try and trade for Matthew Stafford before he got traded to the lions.

There is clearly a lot of interest from the front office of the Colts that they want an outside name to be their quarterback next season. This spot seems like a win win for both teams involved. The Colts would be Super  Bowl contenders with Wentz at quarterback and the Eagles would get rid of Wentz and move forward with Hurts at quarterback.

This seems like the dream spot for both teams, and the likelihood of this happening is high, but the concern for me is if the Colts are willing to offer the Eagles the value the Rams offered for Stafford.

Chicago Bears

There have been many rumors that the Bears are done with Mitchell Trubisky as their quarterback. To add rumor to rumor, there has been talk that they are willing to offer a first round pick, running back Tarik Cohen, and Nick Foles. And Philly is well-acquainted with Foles.

This seems like a stretch for two main reasons. First, Foles has a very big contract, and if the Eagles were to trade for Foles, they would not be getting the fresh start they want. They may even have a bigger quarterback problem because the fans would want Foles to

play since he is the one that won them the Super Bowl back in 2017.

On top of that, there is a statue of the man outside the stadium. Obviously, the fans would cheer for Foles to play rather than Hurts.

However, Nick Foles hasn’t been very good since that Super Bowl win over the Patriots. The only thing that really has the Bears in the mix for Wentz is that they have rumored to have a trade package ready to send to Eagles.

Dark Horse Teams

The Jets have the draft picks they could give up to trade for Wentz, and they have their own quarterback problems at the moment, which they could stabilize by getting Wentz. The Panthers have a chance is because they have had up-and-down quarterback play from Teddy Bridgewater since last season. They may not have the draft picks to give up but they have personal to give up to get Wentz. Last on the list is Washington, because of the uncertainty of their quarterback Alex Smith. He played through a lot of pain this season after coming back off of a 2 year hiatus after breaking his leg. With that being said, the ultra aggressive coach Ron Rivera may try to at least make an offer to get the veteran quarterback.
