Baseball team advances to Diamond Classic

The Blue Devil baseball team is having great success this season so far. They are the first team since 1996 to make the Diamond classic which is the biggest tournament in all south jersey. The team is also ranked second in the group and start playoffs monday.

Going into this weekend against the top team in the state, Bishop Eustace, the team knows it will be a test to see just how good they really are.

“They are a beatable team. We have a lot more player to work with, and overall I think we can out play them,” said head coach Gary Sarno. “Just can’t have that let down inning where they put up four five runs.”

Sarno is referring to a weakness this season.  Although the team has been rather solid, there were a few games they should have one but didn’t because they couldn’t stop that one shut down inning.

Senior LT Struble, the shortstop, is ready for the challenge.

“We match up well to this team,” he said. “They are going to be a tough team to beat but we can win if we play our game. They are the ones playing under pressure.”

Hammonton is going into this game as the underdog. However, being the team that is expected to lose can be an advantage.  The Blue Devils can avoid “tensing out” there because the expectations aren’t high.

Senior Ant Cruz, the starting catcher, is aware of his opponents and what he’s up against.

“If they pitch Smeltzer, we have to jump on him. They are getting all the hype so we can just play relaxed. Just have to play our game make the plays and we can win,” he said.

It’s going to be a big game as two good schools match up Saturday.
