The Ups & Downs of Being a Philadelphia Sports Fan

Heartache and heartbreak, joy and pain.  All emotions can be felt when entering the great City of Brotherly Love: Philadelphia.  When you cross the Ben Franklin bridge, it is impossible to miss the sports complex on Broadstreet.  This complex serves as home to not only the Phillies, Flyers, Eagles, and 76ers, but also to a multitude of let downs and victories at the same time.

Being a Philadelphia sports fan is something that doctors might warn you about.  We get a bad rep amongst other cities’ fans as being harsh and unforgiving.  That’s true.  If you let up a goal, we’ll let you hear it.  One thing we can be is loyal.  We may turn our backs on the players, but we will never turn our backs on our teams.

Philadelphia has not been host to a championship team since the 2008 World Series winning Philadelphia Phillies.  The closest Philadelphia has come since was the 2010 Flyers, who lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Chicago Blackhawks.  The Flyers have only won two Stanley Cups, and they came back-to-back in 1974 and 1975.  The Phillies won championships in 1980 and 2008.  The 76ers won in 1967 and 1983.  The Eagles have nothing to show.  Recently a new wave of lack of competitiveness and change has overtaken Philadelphia.  The 76ers are currently tied for the worst losing streak in any sport at 28 losses in a row.  The Phillies are coming off of two disappointing years and looking to rebound in 2014.  Under new head coach Chip Kelly, the Eagles were led to the playoffs after missing out the year before under the helm of Andy Reid.  The Flyers are poised to make a deep run into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2014.  Some have even picked the Flyers as their dark horse to actually hoist the cup in June.

No matter what, there will always be one constant in Philadelphia.  Cheesesteaks.  Other than our fans, the next recognizable aspect is certainly the Philly Cheesesteak.  If we don’t have a winning team, we will always have a winning sandwich.
