Tony Romo: Clutch or No?

Tony Romo: Clutch or No?

Is Tony Romo, quarterback of “America’s team”, the Dallas Cowboys, the man you want in those big moments?

As his recent record has shown, the answer is no.

December was especially full of many pitiful meltdowns. Despite his skills as a talented quarterback, overall there is something about the end of the season where he just chokes. He can’t win at the end of the season and his Super Bowl hopes fade every year.

Is it the pressure? Is it just chance? Is it a true reflection of his quarterback skills?

With a 11-15 record in December, he most recently had a 4th quarter meltdown against the Green Bay Packers.  He went into halftime with a 23 point lead, yet it was all downhill from there. In the last three minutes of the game, he had two chances to win, but he threw an interception on both possessions. Unfortunately, this seems to be the usual for Romo in the later months of the season.

According to ESPN.com, Tony Romo has thrown seven interceptions since 2006 when his team is leading or tied in the 4th quarter. That is not a statistic that any franchise quarterback wants to lead in with if that player wants to remain a franchise, or long-term, quarterback.

Senior Matt Matro doesn’t think he can be a franchise quarterback.

“He just doesn’t have that clutch gene that good quarterbacks need,” he said.

Many would agree with this statement.  Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are two of the best of all time and they always have that clutch “gene.” By referring to it as “gene,” many football fans think its just something a player has in them. They’re born with it.

The fact that Romo has one playoff win is a troubling statistic for Cowboy fans to hear. He is just 1-3 in the playoffs as a starter. He can barely make it past the first round.

“He can’t win the big games and that means he won’t reach the Super Bowl,” said senior Danny MacDuff.

He has a poor playoff record, but an even worse record on games trying to get into the playoffs, where he is 0-3. However, there are some that can defend Romo on these stats.

Senior Mike Dimeo doesn’t think all the blame falls on Romo’s shoulders though.

“He is constantly having injuries around him, so he doesn’t have the same offensive weapons as some of the other Quarterbacks in the league,” he said.

There are many stances on this issue, but he still has a job so there must be some people out there that still have faith in Tony Romo.
