Nick Foles: Elite or Not?

Nick Foles: Elite or Not?

With an impressive stat line, the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback Nick Foles shows no sign of a “sophomore slump.”

Second-year player Nick Foles leads the league with an outstanding Quarterback rating of 125.2 amongst qualifying players. Also, he has thrown a total of nineteen touchdowns without throwing an interception, an amazing feat in its own.  That is without even mentioning that he is one touchdown shy of tying the NFL record held by Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning, who threw 20 touchdowns without an interception this year.

Using Foles’ name along with Manning’s in the same statement begs the question: Is Nick Foles in the elite class of NFL quarterbacks?

“I like Foles, but his book is not complete,” said history teacher Mr. Dan O’Malley. “There are only four or five ‘elite’ quarterbacks in the NFL,” said history teacher Mr. Dan O’Malley.

Hammonton High School History teacher, Mr. O’Malley says

This class of quarterbacks consists of New England’s Tom Brady, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, Denver’s Peyton Manning, and recently, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco.

But does Foles really have what it takes?

Although he has the highest QBR in the league, he does not post up the best completion percentage.  Foles’ numbers of 124 completions in 196 attempts does not compare with other quarterbacks who have not only attempted more passes, but also completed a higher percentage.

Longtime Eagles fan and fan-favorite teacher, English teacher Mrs. Stacy Peretti thinks Foles needs more time to prove himself.

“Foles is not elite yet because he needs more experience.  But he is on his way,” she said.

Peretti thought the Foles’ abominable performance against the Cowboys in week 7 showed his inexperience.

The true test of Foles’ ability will most likely fall on week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys at Dallas.  If Foles’ turns in a stellar performance, his name could just find it’s place in the elite rankings of NFL Quarterbacks.
