Manning vs Brady: Round 14

Manning vs Brady: Round 14

Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots,  is trying to repeat his win over the Colts’ Peyton Manning in the 2003 AFC Championship when they beat the Colts 24-14.

Brady and Manning both know that this is a big game although a playoff win is where it really matters.

Manning’s most important win over Brady was his win in the AFC Championship over the Patriots. He led the Colts to a 38-34 victory over the Patriots. He led them to the Super Bowl victory soon after. Manning was hoping to repeat this game but that is not the way it ended.

The Broncos jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first half. Manning was not the reason for all of the points though. The Broncos defense forced 3 fumbles in the first half that all led to touchdowns. Stevan Ridley was the first to fumble and it was returned for a touchdown. Ridley was pulled after fumbling, because he has had fumbling issues all year.

The next fumble was caused by Von Miller putting a big hit on Tom Brady from his blind side, and it was picked up and returned to the 10 yard line. The Broncos ran it in shortly after. The Broncos then kicked a field goal after yet another fumble from the Patriots.

Manning then led the Broncos on a scoring drive in which he got his first touchdown of the day by hooking up with Jacob Tamme on a 10 yard pass. Many probably turned the game off thinking it was over. They made the wrong choice though. Those who stayed up got to see what some think was the best game so far this season.

After halftime, Brady started his comeback. The first drive ended in a 5 yard touchdown from Brady to Edelman. A costly fumble by Montee Ball then led to a Brandon Boldin 1 yard touchdown. The Patriots next drive was capped off by  Brady touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski from 6 yards out.

In the 4th quarter Manning threw an interception . The ball was thrown into the wind slightly behind Eric Decker in to the arms of Logan Ryan of the Patriots. Brady then capitalized with a go ahead touchdown pass to Edelman once again from 14 yards this time. the score was now 28-24 with the Patriots out in front.

The Broncos were stopped on their next drive and the Patriots kicked a field goal to make it 31-24. Manning then led the Broncos on an 80 yard drive just like the one in 2006 AFC Championship when he beat Brady. He capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas from 11 yards out to tie it up and send it to overtime.

The Patriots won the coin toss and chose to go with the wind instead of taking the ball first. Many thought this was a dumb decision to give Peyton Manning the ball, but it ended up being a great choice because after a descent drive the Broncos were forced to punt.

The Patriots also punted on their drive. Brady did not keep his second half momentum going in the playoffs.

The Broncos got the ball back again, and on a key third down to try to get in to field goal range, Wes Welker dropped a pass from Manning. Welker was short of the first down anyway, but Welker usually finds a way to get away from defenders, but nobody will know because of the dropped pass.

Brady got the ball back again, and never got much going on that drive. Brady was trying to lead a game winning drive, but it did not happen. Again, they were forced to punt, and many thought this was the time the Broncos would win it.

Manning was getting the ball for the 3rd time, and all the Broncos needed were a field goal. Manning never got the ball though because Welker was the punt returner because Trindon Holliday was struggling with the wind earlier in the game. Welker was back to receive the punt and he was not going to be able to get to it to catch it so he called it off. He wanted everyone to go away, but Tony Carter ran toward the middle of the field. He got hit with the ball and the Patriots recovered already in field goal range. Some think Welker called it off a little too late, which he did, but it just was bad luck that the ball hit Tony Carter. The Patriots kicked a field goal to win 34-31 in overtime.

Brady led a comeback in the second half after being down 24-0 at halftime. Brady is now 10-4 vs Manning all time. All fans are hoping for another Manning vs Brady matchup in the playoffs. Manning vs Brady round 15 will hopefully happen this postseason.
