The Golden Globes recognize many amazing American and international films as well as American television. They are known as the kick off show for the awards show season. However the Golden Globes are far less traditional than say the Oscars or Emmy’s. The Golden Globes are considered much more of a party with the endless amount of free champagne that is given out. This however leads to many memorable speeches and comical tv moments.

The first Golden Globes occurred on January 20, 1944 and were created by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It was an informal ceremony held at 20th Century Fox. The awards were first presented as scrolls until the president of the association, Maria Cisternas, presented the idea of a shiny globe on a cylindrical pedestal. This new idea symbolized the world and is what is continued to be used to this day.

This year the awards show will be held on February 28, 2021 marking the 78th Golden Globes ceremony. The awards show will be hosted this year by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler making this the first bi-coastal Golden Globes ceremony.

Today the Golden Globes recognizes 25 different categories; 14 in motion picture and 11 in television.

This year Netflix dominates both the film and television categories with a total of 44 nominations. However the awards show is very unpredictable because the winners are selected by the HFPA which consist of 90 journalists from 55 different countries.

One of the main reasons that many do enjoy watching the awards show is because it helps them predict who may win the Oscars.

Since the ceremony takes place a few days before voting for the Oscars ends this sways many of the votes, which in the end gives the audience a good guess into who may actually win the Oscars.

All things considered the Golden Globes are a definite must watch.

Who knows something unexpected may happen or you may find something new to watch.
