Oscars so very white

Oscars

To be honest with you, the only reason I watched the Oscars was because of Chris Rock. However, this Oscar season got some attention. The attention is from OscarsSoWhite, which asks why all nominees were white. Out of the 20 actors and actress nominated for an award this year, none of them were minorities. There were people telling Chris Rock to step down and to boycott it.

However, he didnt and im glad because he handled it perfectly. He hits it head on which is the best way to bring up something because it’s raw and truthful. And that’s something only a comedian could do. And if you look back to 1988 when Eddie Murphy hosted, and you have to imagine, this is right after Raw, his 1987  stand-up special, so he was huge, now he’s just been making movies and relaxing, for now, but Murphy talked about almost the same stuff we’re talking about today which has to do with the lack of diversity in Hollywood. This isn’t new, but that’s not an excuse for it happening. If you watch Chris Rock’s monologue he does a great job of bringing it up. He opens up on all of this controversy and immediately lightens the room.

He had some powerful moments, effectively mixing humor with serious social commentary. For example, he joked about him being told to boycott it, Jada Pinkett Smith and all the controversy.

There were some good movies this year that could have gotten nominated, dope, straight outta compton,Concussion, creed, stars wars, etc. There were a ton of good movies this year. During the monologue, Chris Rock mentioned Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. She was one of the first celebrities to publicly announce that she was going to boycott the Oscars because her husband didn’t get nominated for concussion. And he joked that she wasn’t invited.

Even though the whole Oscars are over now, the racial problems in hollywood and all over the world still very much exist. And if we let it go like we’ve been doing for so many years, it will progressively get worse. Even though it’s a lot better than it was 60 years ago, there is still a lot to be done. the first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem and make strides to a better world.
