Yeezus Tour Review: Kanye West

I had the pleasure of experiencing Kanye West live in concert on his Yeezus Tour.

The critically acclaimed concert series was not only a compilation of West’s music but a cinematic masterpiece. So much work was put into this, you would think that this was more than a concert but thats exactly what it was, a revolutionary work of art.

As I was first walking on to the concert hall floor, I was astounded at the great amount of detail put into the stage. the front of the stage was a huge triangular piece of ice and behind it stood a gargantuan glacier with a circular screen mounted on top similar to an all seeing screen out of George Orwells,”1984″.

As everyone stood in great haste for Kanye to come out, the occasional sudden laser show conducted by the FX team would serve as a tease for the fans. Every time a laser graced the stage an ocean of Kanye fans would go wild thinking that West was going to run out and tear up the stage in his typical Kanye style. This went on for about 15 minutes until the lights finally dimmed and a bright spotlight shined right on Kanye wearing a tank top that was about two sizes too big, extremely tattered jeans and a mask a top the glacier as the buzz saw synthesizer sounds of “on sight” blared to satisfy thousands of patiently waiting fans.

In the first hour, Kanye played all of his hit songs on his Yeezus album like “I am a God”, “Blood on the Leaves” and “Black Skinhead” while wearing a diamond encrusted mask and trench coat that would look ridiculous on anyone but him. Half way through the show Kanye went to the center stage as a church organ calmly played a rendition of his song “Runaway”. Kanye let out an auto tuned scream that brought everyone to their feet. He started half talking half singing about how it is detrimental to reach for your dreams in life. “See theres two types of people in this world, see theres dreamers and theres haters” screamed West in his computerized voice. He then started talking about how if he let haters bring down his spirit growing up, he would never have got where he is today. This really touched me because for that split second I felt like I could achieve anything in the world.

Kanye spent the last half of the concert performing his older hit songs, which made the crowd erupt in a state of excitement and nostalgia. Songs like “flashing lights”, “Cant tell me nothing” and “touch the sky” personally brought me back to a time when I was a young fan of Kanye begging my mom to let me buy my his newest album. This feeling remained for the rest of the concert and brought me to a conclusion that Kanye is my favorite musical artist ever.

I am in utter gratitude that i was able to experience Kanye West perform live. The Yeezus Tour was way more than a concert, it was a thought provoking masterpiece that forever changed my life. I’ll close saying the same unforgettable quote Kanye said to close the show, “Your children will be in awe that you went to the Yeezus Concert.”
