‘Shrek: the Musical’ Doesn’t Scare People Away

Shrek: the Musical Doesnt Scare People Away

Upon seeing the poster for Shrek the Musical, I was first apprehensive on what to expect. However, it surpassed any expectations or any doubt I had prior to viewing it.

The original Shrek movie that came out in 2001 was based off of the children’s book written by William Steig. It was not until many years later that it was made into a Broadway production.

It was on Broadway from 2008 to 2010. However, the DVD release of the show was on September 7, 2013. Not many people knew of the musical until it was out on DVD. Now it can be viewed using Netflix.

When it comes to DreamWorks, remakes and new projects are always being done. Shrek has been brought to Broadway like many other movies in the past. DreamWorks has released several musicals in the past, but this proved to be one of the more successful ones.

In 2009, the musical won a Tony Award for the Best Costume Design. In that same year, it also won Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Set Design, Outstanding Costume Design. The set design and scene changes were truly remarkable. The set changed as the scene was progression in a manner that never distracted the viewer from the actual musical. The set was moved using the actual stage. Not many broadway productions are able to accomplish it in such a flawless manner.

As for the actual play, it still remained true to the film. It was enjoyable for a younger audience and for an older audience. It has the enough humor that can be enjoyed by children, but it also contained more mature humor for an older audience.

The songs were also relatively easy to get in to. A small tap number is included in the show as well. The characters were spectacular especially the Donkey. Donkey has as much wit and energy as he did in the movie. He truly blew the show to whole new category.

This musical gets 4 1/2 devils out of 5 and I would recommend it to anyone who does not mind musical numbers and juvenile humor.
