Indoor track gains speed in second season

The Blue Devils indoor track teams are looking to have a successful season this year in more ways than one. A majority of the winter track athletes are looking to prepare for spring track or simply stay in shape, but at the same time they are looking to win track meets.

Runners have high expectations, including senior Jordan Ciocco.

“My goals for this season are to go to states and Meet of Champs,” he said. “I also want to break the 4x mile record along with the mile record.”

The team has increased the amount of training compared to last year. Team members are optimistic that the extra work will help them get in better shape and prepare for either spring track or other sports they partake in.

“I’m using winter track to keep my legs moving not only for spring track but for the upcoming cross country season too,”,” said junior Neil Massaro.”Running is a constant sport so I use winter track to keep training and not give up.”

Some participate to keep in shape and others do it for the family atmosphere of the team extends to the classrooms and even outside of school.

“I always liked running and I saw it as an opportunity to do what I like and hangout with my friends,” said senior Joe Weiss.

In its second season as an official winter sport, the indoor track team is looking to assert itself as a legitimate running force. Though they had a successful first season, the team as a whole is looking forward to having an even better second campaign.

Girls head coach Michelle Wolosky and boys head coach Jeff Dey had a clear vision for their teams.

“The plan for the upcoming season is to certainly improve from the past season and show other teams we are here to stay,” he explained. “I also want to make sure every athlete on the team has a chance to succeed and become better.”

Dey understands that some athletes are in the program to stay in shape for other sports.  He and the other coaches have incorporated more intense core and lifting programs to help them excel.

The teams had its first meet on December 20 and will compete through February.
