NHS members teach Halloween safety

Sara DeRose normally follows the rules, but not today.

Dressed in footsie pajamas with her hair in pigtails, she transformed into Harley Quinn, the masked villain from the DC comic series and then took a trip to the ECEC and WES.

“I felt that [the actors] were really helpful to the kids,” she said. “[Students] were remembering the rules when we went around at the end and were talking to them, and they seemed to enjoy what we did at the play. They were having fun, while learning something.”

DeRose and other members of the National Honor Society performed a safety play for the Warren E. Sooy and ECEC students on Halloween. On stage, costumes ranged from Disney princesses to Teenage Mutant Turtles, who all gathered to give safety rules for Trick-or-Treating.

Rules covered all types of subjects, from carrying a flashlight, to staying with a group, to making sure an adult checks candy before its eaten.

The play was a fun and enlightening experience, for the actors and audience members alike.

Emily Pavesi, another NHS member, was hopeful that the performance made an impact.

“[The students] really absorbed the rules we gave them, and retained the information, so, hopefully they put [the rules] into use,” she said.
