Book Club members visited the Hammonton Early Childhood Education Center and read to kindergarteners and first graders on Tuesday, March 1.  Not only was it enjoyable for those who volunteered, but the trip gave the younger students a chance to mix up their typical schedule.

For senior Autumn Vasquez, it was a novelty to go to the old school that she had graduated from and to see her former teachers. She wanted to take the opportunity to hopefully make a kid’s day better or exciting.

“To me, I felt that the kids enjoyed having an older figure reading to them,” said Vasquez.

Junior Savannah Delguercio enjoyed watching the kids faces light up as soon as she started reading.

“The main reason why I went, was because I got the feeling from when I was in first grade, listening to the different visitors that came in,” she said. “It made me feel as though she was 6 years old again.”

Senior Grace Watson  loved getting to talk to the kids and hearing their stories while they were doing activities.

“I went because I want to inspire the children to read more,” she said.

Watson, who loves reading and being with children, hopes “to inspire the children to join the book club when they are in high school.”

The Book Club, under the supervision of Media Specialist Mrs. Margaret Altmann, has other plans to use its love of reading to help the community. They are currently hosting a book drive from March 1- April 8 in partnership with AtlantiCare, which will. forward all donations to the pediatric wing, and birthing center of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
