On December 31, 2018 a panel of state court judge abolished the requirement that students must pass the PARCC Test in order to graduate high school. This change has been recommended by both students and school districts for a few years, for its requirements have been deemed unnecessary and unfair.

A few months prior, NJ Department of Education Assistant Commissioner Linda Eno announced that the name of the new standardized test will be the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA). Other than a simple name change, this test will provide fewer questions and be simpler to administer.

By reducing the length of testing by 25 percent, the time to complete the test will also be reduced from nearly eight hours to six. This reform will take effect starting with the class of 2020.
