Layne Mossop, who plays Elle Woods in the production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” raises her arms while the remainder of the cast holds their pose for instructor Dawn Baldwin during a rehearsal of the dance number “What You Want” on Friday, January 31.

Freshman Sam Mossop stepped out to the front of the stage and begins to sing aloud.

“Baby, my future’s all planned; I’ve got some dreams to make true,” he declared to his big sister, senior Layne Mossop.

Both could feel the heat of the lights beating down and the pressure mounting as a full audience watched with anticipation.

Well, an imagined audience because it was only rehearsal. And the Mossops aren’t having a normal sibling conversation either.

They were performing a scene from “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” the spring musical set to open on March 13.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical,” inspired by the novel by Amanda Brown and the 2001 film starring Reece Witherspoon, tells the story of Elle Woods, a heart-broken sorority girl who tries to win back her ex-boyfriend by following him to law school at Harvard University, where she surprisingly finds herself with a new passion for the law and a new love.

According to Ms. Marissa Carrafiello, who has directed eight musicals at the high school, this is the most fun show that the students have done in recent years.

“Mr. [Kevin] Arena suggested the musical to me,” she said.

Arena, who went to see marching band director Mr. Jason Koenig perform in the pit orchestra for a school production of the musical in a Philadelphia high school immediately thought it would be a good fit for Hammonton.

“It was hilarious, high energy, and easy to get attached to,” Arena said. “It’s a musical that students would embrace because it’s more modern and relevant.”

Carrafiello agrees that the student actors are enthusiastic because they are familiar with it, and that has carried over into their work on stage.

“I always set deadlines for the actors to have their lines memorized,” she said. “And for the first time in eight years, the cast had an entire act memorized at the deadlines, and I didn’t have to feed any lines to them during rehearsal.”

She is excited and is anticipating the final product.

Those performing the show can hardly contain their excitement

Neila Espin, a sophomore who plays the part of a sorority girl name Kate, likes the upbeat nature of the show.

“My favorite scene of the show is “Positive;” it’s really fun,” she said. “I love to sing, dance, and act; and I love that this show has large, group numbers!”

Senior Jade Silva, who plays the part of Enid Hoopes, also enjoys the big group scenes, saying, “The big numbers are my favorite part of being in this musical.”

“I really like to sing and dance, and I will definitely do the play again next year because i love it!” said sophomore Olivia Hess, a sophomore who is doing the play for the first time this year.

Diamond Morehouse, a freshman playing the role of Chutney, participates in the musical because she knows it will help prepare her for her future goals.

“I am going to be an actress when I’m older. Definitely, no matter what!” she exclaimed. “That’s why I love play.”

She also shared that this year’s musical attracts a lot of different people because it’s modern and fun, and it works for everyone.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical” will be performed on March 13, 14, and 15 at 7 pm. Tickets are $12 and seats can be reserved in advance.
