Nicole Damico for Junior Class Secretary

In your opinion, what is/are the most pressing issue(s) for HHS students this year?

I think one of the most pressing issues at HHS is the involvement of our student body. We usually have a good amount of students with school spirit, but it’s usually the same kids. Many kids don’t get involved in the school which I believe is a problem because getting involved gives kids a chance to destress from all the work they stress over in school. It makes it a more fun environment for everyone and gives you the memories you can look back onto in the future.

What is important about this year/grade (i.e. freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year), and what role do you believe class officers have in making it a successful one?

Junior year I feel has so much potential in it as long as we all work together to make it that way. I’m sure everyone has heard throughout freshman and sophomore year how stressful and hard junior year is. With all that stress and work, we need a way to escape and enjoy these years we’re in. Knowing that we only have 2 years left of high school is a scaring thing to most people to think about, but if our class officers can help take some of the stress off of the students back by doing anything from just being there for information to coming with different ideas the students can help out or get involved in fun events.

What are some of the strengths of the HHS student community?

In my opinion, one of the biggest strengths of our school community is how much we care about our sports. Friday nights are always packed in the bleachers and students are always big on going to other sports like soccer, field hockey, volleyball, etc. This definitely gives the student body a good look for how much everyone cares about what’s happening within the school!

What are some areas of the HHS experience that could be better?

I think to make the HHS experience even better is finding more ways to get everyone involved. I noticed last year that students who don’t normally get involved with extracurriculars or school functions were getting involved in stuff last year when there were things that they were more interested in available to them. For example, we had more things to be drawn for homecoming that we knew a lot of people would be interested in helping with and they did. This helped make them want to get involved next time too. Another thing I think that affects many in HHS is the stress a lot of people put themselves under. It makes school really hard for kids to enjoy as much. I think HHS has so many things for students to do and get involved in, but even adding maybe just one more thing or something else for students to do to get their minds off all the work they do on a daily basis could maybe help people with this, students and staff.

Write one question that WE SHOULD HAVE ASKED YOU BUT DIDN’T. Then answer it!

One question I wish I was asked is why I want to get involved. I’ve always been so invested in school and having as much fun as you can while there. I like to get involved in as many clubs as I can and help give my ideas to make school a better experience for everyone in every aspect. I think it’s so important that everyone can have a good experience in high school in every way they can. We only get to be in high school for 4 years, and while sometimes those 4 years feel like the longest years of our lives at some point, they really are just 4 years that fly by. I’m sure we all remember being freshmen like it was yesterday and keep asking ourselves how are we juniors already. 4 years, that’s all we get and then it’s over forever. Making those 4 years as memorable as possible is important to me to make it good myself and for everyone around me. That is the biggest reason why I am running and will continue to get involved.
