Glyza Canovas for Junior Class President

In your opinion, what is/are the most pressing issue(s) for HHS students this year?

Due to this year’s unforeseen circumstances, there was obviously a huge shift in operations at HHS. Although remote learning is best for the health and safety of everyone in our school, along with it comes limited peer interaction and limited student-teacher interaction. In stressful times like these, it becomes significantly more stressful when attempting to learn from home without the resources you would receive in a classroom. With decreased peer interaction, there’s little that could be done in school to take students’ minds off the multiple stressors surrounding them. Missing out on high school defining experiences such as dances, pep-rallies, and football games make it harder to look forward to the ongoing school year. As president, I hope to be able to devise ways to make this school year more fun and relaxing for everyone.

What is important about this year/grade (i.e. freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year), and what role do you believe class officers have in making it a successful one?

Junior year is considered to be the most difficult year of high school. As juniors, our plates are overloaded with standardized tests, increasingly harder classes, college tours, and so on. Especially with COVID, this year is just even harder. Junior year basically consists of 3 things: stress, stress, and stress. In order to make this school year successful, I believe class officers have the responsibility of trying to relieve some of that stress. It is extremely important for students to be able to unwind, have fun, and enjoy the aspects of school that don’t involve learning. As class officers, we must make the school environment more enjoyable by listening to our peers and always keeping their best interests in mind. (if we have prom, pep-rallies, or even anything this year, and me and john are elected p and vp, i guarantee we would make it so fun)

What are some of the strengths of the HHS student community?

The HHS student community is absolutely crazy when it comes to school spirit. Sophomore year, our class really stepped up its game when it came to pep-rally participation which was fantastic. At pep-rallies, students are seen cheering on their classmates, taking games like musical chairs extremely seriously, singing at the top of their lungs when it comes to karaoke, and overall having a great time. During Spirit Week, participation is insane. You will rarely see someone not wearing what specific theme is up for that day. When it comes to school spirit, the HHS student body will never let you down.

What are some areas of the HHS experience that could be better?

Although pep-rallies are insane amounts of fun, time management throughout its preparation and its actual occurrence could improve. Sometimes, it would be very disappointing for a game to be canceled with so many kids signed up for it because we ran out of time. The end of pep-rallies were also very chaotic because everyone tends to leave at once and pile through the two doors.

Why are you running for class office?

I’m running for Junior Class President because as a student like all of you I can understand how all of you must feel during this stressful time. The workload is heavy, we can’t be near our friends, we’re being tested and quizzed left and right, and there’s no fun to look forward to this year. Let me help you guys with that. I am extremely determined to make this year fun and exciting for everyone, with all of your input taken into account of course. If I get elected, I would look forward to brainstorming many ideas with my fellow class officers that would make this year enjoyable. I love talking to the many different types of students that attend HHS, I’m a good listener, I work hard, and overall I believe I would be a great fit for this position.
