How Much Work is Actually put into the Yearbook?

Some students in Hammonton High School don’t think much about the yearbook club. They might see it as just another club that doesn’t do that much work. However, when you ask the students actually in the club, it’s a completely different perspective. Take me for example, my Freshman and Sophomore years, I was not part of yearbook, and didn’t think much of it. However last year, my junior year, I started to help out a little bit. Put a little work in here and there, then decided that I wanted to become a permanent member. After being in it for about a year now, I realized that there are many things very difficult about it. Here are some examples that make the yearbook difficult to create.

  • Which Underclassmen Portrait do i choose when there are doubles? How many students are needed to be accounted for in the camera shy section? What if a student’s name is spelled wrong?
  • Where should I put the sports picture? Who should I interview, what should I ask each person? What if there aren’t enough pictures of that sport?
  • What Senior portrait do you pick for each student? What memory/quote is appropriate? Will students be upset with their senior portraits? Where do we add the superlatives? How will kids feel if they don’t win Senior Superlatives?
  • How do we decide what Homecoming pictures we use? How do we decide who to ask about the pep rallies? How do we come up with the additional spreads? What would be interesting to the students?
  • When will we work on the yearbook? Will we need to stay after everyday? How many pages will we need to finish by the deadline? Why can’t Hammonton High school have yearbook as a class like other schools?

These are many things we have to consider in the yearbook when we are working on it. The editors in the Hammonton High school yearbook club put a lot of work into it, and deserve a lot more credit than they get. So when you go online and order the yearbook, remember, students put a lot of work into it.
