The unknowns of college can lead to worry

When going to college there are multiple things going through students heads for what is to come for the next 4 years of their life.

What roommate am I going to get? Will it be someone normal or completely crazy? Am I going to get lost on such a big campus? How will my placement testing go? What is my major going to be? You get the point.

When going to the college a necessary process is deciding who is going to be your roommate and what kind of dorm area you would like to live in. Sometimes students come into college already knowing who is going to be their roommate because one of their best friends is going to school with them. Other students, such as myself, need to find a roommate that shares similar interests to themselves. The process of finding a roommate can vary for each university or college, but for Rutgers University each incoming freshman fills out a survey, answering questions based on their personality traits. After doing so, the survey will match up that student to about 10 other compatible matches. Unfortunately, its sort of like online dating: awkward and uncomfortable.

Another big fear of incoming freshman is the size of the campus. Colleges vary in size; some colleges only have like 10 thousand students or less where as a university like Penn State or Rutgers has about 50 thousands undergraduates. When it comes to big universities, there are multiple campuses which means walking to some of your classes is not an option. It can be somewhat confusing having to go to a certain bus stop at a certain time for a certain class. The one thing to think about is that you along with the tons of other freshman are going through the same thing.

Lastly, placement testing is a huge worry for incoming freshman. If a student is lucky, the college they picked does not require placement testing. Unfortunately 90% of colleges do require placement testing so that the school knows where you fall academically. The layout of a placement test is always reading comprehension and multiple math areas. Also, sometimes students have to take a foreign language portion of the test.
