Pep Rallies: Good Idea or Old Fashioned?

Nick Gold loves to show his school spirit. In fact, he was voted by his classmates as having the “Most School Spirit” in the yearbook.

He enjoys supporting school events and hopes to go to as many school related events as possible.

So, for someone like Nick Gold, pep rallies are the ultimate event.  In fact, the most recent one was held Friday, March 3, to recognize winter sports teams.

Although pep rallies are practical and sound like a great idea, many students and faculty have mixed feelings about the events.

Senior Maryann Nowlan  loves pep rallies and gets excited every time we have them.

“I love them because I am the MC and I run the show,” she said. “My favorite memory is when I was a crazy bowling pin sophomore year.”

Senior Taylor Downey agrees with Nowlan.

“I love them. They are so much fun and I always have a good time,” she said. “I loved looking at Brian dance in the pep rally earlier this year.”

Students are not alone. History teacher Mr. Anthony Angelozzi enjoys the pep rallies because they are break from the everyday routine.

“They are pretty good. It is a time to relax and watch a show,” he said. “I think the band is amazing and I appreciate the music they present.”

Despite their popularity with some, other students and faculty regard pep rallies as outdated events that can be boring at times.

“They are not as fun as they could be. Maybe because students [in the stands] are not as involved as they should be,” senior Kellen Whitney said. “I loved when Joe Pinto asked Samantha Berenato to prom during the show.”

For Matt Parker it’s about how entertaining the shows are.

“The shows are usually boring and not fun,” he said. “The only thing I found amusing was when Chris Berenato ripped his shirt and pants off in front of the whole school.”

Secretary Mrs. Wendy Porretta believes that pep rallies are a good idea, but should be appealing to students.

“Pep rallies should be held in the middle or even beginning of the seasons instead of at the end. There is nothing to get pumped for,” she said. “Administration should try and accommodate to what the students want to see.”
