Let’s Talk About The Fanny

Is there ever a time when you need something to carry your essentials, but a backpack is too much to cary? If so, then you and the gym coaches of Hammonton High School have something in common. If there is ever a time you need a bandaid, theres no need to wait 45 minutes to go inside.

“Im not required to wear a fanny pack, but it’s just more suitable for all the things I should be carrying around.” says coach Frazier. “Now I can carry my phone with me outside in case any emergencies are to happen.”

Not all coaches are following this trend, however those who do are prepared for anything. Sometimes a game of four square can lead to a girl doubled over in pain because her brand new acrylic nail ripped off her finger, or a student with asthma takes one on one a little too seriously and needs their inhaler.

However, is all of this worth looking outdated? This handy-trend from the 1980’s is now thought to be “old fashioned”. Fanny packs date all the way back to medieval times, when almost all clothing had no pockets. It eventually evolved into a money bag for tourists, then caught on as trend in the 80’s and 90’s. Vogue often featured models wearing fanny packs  during the 1990’s for strictly fashion reasons rather than convenience.

Not to mention, there is always more than one gym coach teaching each period within the same vicinity. If something were to happen, then there are more than enough people to take control of the situation. Some may be wondering: so why would you attach a bag to your body if you don’t really have to?

Depending on who the coach is teaching, they may need to feel more secure and organized in order to have a smooth gym class. The gym coaches that I have spoken to that wear the fanny packs teach sophomores and freshman. They are dealing with newer members of high school every day which means the students are oblivious to a lot of things that they should or should not do.
