Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: Celebration of Hard Work or Self Esteem Destroyer?

Victorias Secret Fashion Show: Celebration of Hard Work or Self Esteem Destroyer?

On December 10, many television channels were turned to CBS in order to watch the Victoria Secret (VS) angels walk the runway for the lingerie company’s annual fashion show.

Twitter feeds bursted with tweets that showed both admiration and disgust for the show.

While watching, I admired the models’ confidence and grace. However, not everyone agreed.  Some argue that one problem with shows like this is that these perfectly attractive women provide a false perception about what a woman should look like.

English teacher Mrs. MaryAnn Meehan believes that these models’ appearances are not completely natural. She also doesn’t think its healthy for girls to expect to look this way.

“The image of the VS model is an exaggerated form of beauty. Its a little self degraded for a real woman to look at her and think ‘Wow, I will never look that way.’ That image is most likely never going to be achieved,” she said.

“But of course they try to make you believe that once you purchase their bras you will achieve that,” she added with a laugh.

Physical education teacher and wrestling coach Mr. David Mauriello has mixed feelings on this topic.

“I can say as a man I can appreciate the way they look, but to me they do look a little thin right now.”

Instructional aide Caitlin Cristella strongly believes that this presentation of models has a negative effect on society’s view of women.

“They are too skinny; it’s kind of gross. I think they are a bad influence on young girls because its not reality. Women don’t look like that,” she said. “They are airbrushed in the magazines.”

On the other hand, some students think these models should be admired for their hard work and dedication to their job.

“Victoria’s Secret models should be the idols of young women today because they work for the body they have. Much time and effort has to be put into looking that good,” said senior Ed Aldridge.

Senior Lauren Conway agrees and even let us in on her secret crush.

“Well I have a girl crush on Candace, and they are just beautiful people. They work hard for that rockin’ body. I think they should be looked up to. Deep down all girls wish they could be a VS Angel,” she said.

“It made me mad when girls said they ‘wouldn’t want that body anyway’ on Twitter,” she added.

Senior Matt Matro agrees as well and thinks some girls can be a little jealous.

“I think you should look up to them honestly. Why wouldn’t they? People just make their own excuses as to why they don’t look like them. They are an inspiration and most of them probably started from the bottom just like others and now they are here,” he said.

Senior Jenna Destefano thinks they should be looked up to; however women and young girls should also be content with themselves.

“Well, I’m obsessed with them but I think their bodies are so unrealistic because nobody is that tall to be that skinny. I think people should be comfortable in their own skin because if they don’t have confidence nobody else will look at them like that anyway,” she said.
