Hammonton High School’s sports program is growing with the addition of a new co-ed swim team, set to compete this winter with coaches HHS English teacher Mr. Amendolia and Ms. Spanfelner, an elementary school teacher.
According to Mr. Ramsay, the district superintendent, the conversation about the swim team came up when he visited community groups this summer, including the Hammonton Swim Club. Years ago, the swim team ended because of budget cuts.
“Approximately 100 kids in the district swim competitively,” he said.
Mr. Amendolia, who graduated HHS in 20___, quickly expressed interest in coaching once the Board of Education approved the club.
“When I was a freshman at Hammonton, I was on the team, and I remember a lot of fun memories from it,” he said.
During his second year, the swim team was cut. He continued to swim recreationally during his college years.
“The goal is for the club to grow into a team that will be able to compete,” Amendolia said. “We would be sharing time and a possible future status as a swim team with Buena High School.”
The goal of the club is to grow into a competitive team within the next year or two, according to Mr. Sacco, the athletic director. Sacco explained that students will be bussed to St. Augustine’s pool
“Buena already has a registered team but their numbers have fallen off. They want to join with Hammonton in hopes of getting their numbers up,” he said.
Interested students need to register online by November 1 and can sign up for the remind. An interest meeting will be held on October 24 in room 203 during 8th period.
