The Hammonton Boys Track team faced both ACIT and Oakcrest winning against both teams, to kick off a great start to the season on Tuesday, April 9. This was the first time in 30 years the Hammonton Boys team won against Oakcrest. Hammonton won 80 to 60 winning, by over 20 points.
Members of the team feel very proud of the accomplishment.
Smith, who runs hurdles and Jumps, ran a 16.5 in the 110 Hurdle, high jumps a 5 ’10 and long jumps a 19′ 8.5.
“It feels great to be a part of a team that has beat Oakcrest after 30 long years,” senior Jayden Smith said. “The atmosphere is amazing and is very great to be around, and everyone on the team is so supportive of each other and we always cheer each other on no matter if we are winning or losing.“
Senior Matt Martino, who runs the 1600m and a 3200m, attributes the success to the bond between team members.
“The whole team was locked in for the meet against both teams and it was great to support each other. I’m happy with everyone’s performance as we all contributed to the team score,” he said.
For junior Lucas Iuliucci, the meet was both a team and individual success.
“It’s my second time up against them and last year they beat us pretty badly. I feel like I performed the best I could, I took first overall in the 800 and was part of the winning 4×400 team so I think I did my job, and then the other members of the 4×400 also did their job.”
Looking forward to the season, the season includes a total of three team meets, with the final regular season meet at Vineland on May 7th, against Vineland, Millville and Ocean City. Individuals may advance to events such as Sectionals, State Groups and the Meet of Champions.
