May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Background Information
May is the month to spread awareness about the importance of mental health. Mental health awareness month means that there is emphasis placed on providing support and breaking stigmas associated with mental illness and seeking treatment.
Everyone has mental health, whether it be positive or negative. It’s important to focus on that health before an illness can come about. This is very similar to regular bodily health. When an individual is feeling a little sick, they seek help from a doctor; the same thing should happen with one’s mind.
Theme
Each year there is a different theme for this special month. This year, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Month is “More than Enough”. This theme allows everyone an opportunity to come together and appreciate their self worth. This theme is meant to encourage all people, regardless of their background in any context.
