Musician Spotlight: Kevin Haley

Musician Spotlight: Kevin Haley

Kevin is an 11th grade student here at Hammonton Highschool, who is actively involved in our music program. I asked Kevin a few questions about his musical life and his feelings on upcoming performances.

What instruments do you play?
“ I play trombone, trumpet, and I’m picking up the piano.”
Are you involved in any bands?
“I am in concert band, jazz band, and marching band.”
How did you get started?
“My dad played the trombone, but prior to middle school I didn’t appreciate the concept of music until I was able to take from other people’s drive and passion.”
When did you start playing?
“I started playing in 4th grade.”
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
“My biggest musical inspiration is Chet Baker, he has a really inspiring story… Basically he was jumped by a group of guys one night and he got his teeth knocked out but he continued to play trumpet and sing.”

Do you write your own music?
“I do not write my own music, but I do transpose it. One thing I would have to say about transposing is that every instrument is different, but there are different families of instruments meaning some are not totally foreign concepts.”
How does it feel to be performing again?
“It’s a big relief to be back onstage and it’s nice to put yourself out there again.”
Are there going to be any differences at the concert due to COVID?
“The only difference is that students performing will be wearing masks when they don’t play.”
