Today’s schools play a major role in shaping what students think and believe. In its effort to prepare them as future leaders of the nation, teachers and administrators try to model good behavior and instill values that help all society. For this reason, we are calling on Hammonton High School to consider how it can take action to reduce its impact on the environment by improving its carbon footprint and eliminating as much plastic waste as it can. In our school straws currently come in 24 cases as packs of 500 every 4-6 weeks. The state currently passes the expense of school food necessities therefore if the school wanted to switch to paper straws it would have to be approved by the state.

Many businesses have already started doing this, including Starbucks, SeaWorld Entertainment, American Airlines, and Royal Caribbean amongst others. Within the past year, certain places have been banning the use of straws such as Seattle, Washington. Since the ban the use of straws has been decreased by 2.3 Million single use. Certain people believe that straws are a symbol of our consumption.

The campaign “Strawless in Seattle” by Lonely Whale is raising awareness to how straws effect the ocean. Tons of celebrities have joined in on this movement posting videos and pledging they will stop “sucking”.
