One of Us: Mrs. Kelly Celona

One of Us: Mrs. Kelly Celona

As a former student at Hammonton High, math teacher Mrs. Kelly Celona knows the atmosphere of our school. Celona, who has taught in the building for 14 years,  is a Honors Advanced Math teacher and a Mathematical Analysis Applications and Connections teacher. A graduate of TCNJ,  she is a caring teacher for not only the subject of math, but for her students as well. Celona is a fun and energetic person, as well as a great teacher.

If you weren’t a math teacher,…I would probably want to be a teacher of daily living, for students that have hard time with transitioning from  the high school reality to the real world. Even though math is still involved, I notice that most kids leave and enter the real world not knowing how to use a credit card, or open a checking account by themselves. This situation is influenced the most with car loans and major payments. Even though it is math related, it really isn’t. There are other things involved that most students don’t know or realize.

My favorite thing about teaching math is…Math is very straight forward. You know what the answer is, and you know if you are right or wrong, as where English is very subjective and I never really liked that. I am only worried about being right or wrong that’s why my favorite subject was math, and that’s why I love teaching it.

If I didn’t teach…I would probably go into social work or something that is helping people or families. It’s kind of like teaching because teaching is helping, so I would stick along of the lines of helping people.

What I do for fun outside of school is…I like to play with my kids, take them to the movies. I also like to take them to the zoo, and to the park. I just like spending time with my family. I find it fun and relaxing.

My biggest pet peeve is…using a pen in math class. I really hate that.

My biggest inspiration is…actually a former teacher of mine. She was a math teacher here, and she retired a couple of years ago. Mrs. Shelly was basically my biggest inspiration, and the reason why I went into teaching math.

Something interesting that no one knows about me is…when I was young, up until middle school, I played basketball with Ms. Siscone.
