Class rank has become quite a controversial topic among high schools nationwide for the past few years, and, therefore, many have gotten rid of the system completely. The reason? There are several:

A lot of people believe that class rank does not always accurately define a student’s academic achievement. There are countless other factors that may be able to calculate something so diverse significantly more reasonable, such as the extracurricular activities an individual is apart of, or even the interests and strengths that a specific person has.

In addition, it steals away the valuable purpose and priceless longing of learning in the first place, replacing it with excruciatingly unhealthy, unnecessary competition amongst students that holds the power to do more harm than help in the long run. This adds on to the overwhelming pressure and anxiety that students have unfortunately been accustomed with.

In summation, as colleges begin their usual routine of reviewing applications every year, certain high schools that do not use the class ranking system anymore are obviously not providing that information to students applying to various colleges; yet, they are still getting accepted nonetheless. So…does aligning students with a particular rank really matter that much at all? What do you think?
