In the music video for Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” there are many references to racism, gun violence, appropriation of black culture, and even on how we distract ourselves amidst all the violence happening around us as the audience which touch on cultural points that led us as a country to where we are now.
Here are 5 key points that I believe are the most important, in case you missed them.
Charleston Church Shooting.
In the video, Gambino walks into a room where a church choir is singing and he is tossed an assault rifle and guns them all down. There are no excuses to miss this reference as it is tied to the 2015 Charleston Church shooting in which white supremacist Dylan Roof shot and killed 9 victims inside a black church.
