Social media sites throughout the last 10 years have come into and faded out of the lives of almost everyone. Nowadays, most people in the United States have a social media site of some sort. According to Statistic Brain.com, 58% of Americans  have used any social media site.

For the newbie just entering the world of social media, it may be hard to know what’s worth investigating and what’s worth ignoring. This list has been compiled for those lost wanderers, unsure of what direction to go.

Sites that are Stale

Facebook: Facebook used to be one of the most used social media site out there (and perhaps still is), but those immersed in the world of social media seem to be on the “outs” with it. Although it has had some updates (such as its newsfeed layout and instant messaging to friends), it, for the most part, has been like “old faithful.” In an industry that always ready for the next big thing, that’s not an advanage.

MySpace: Myspace is another social media site that was once a very popular site to be on that is now basically dead. This site used to have the most users, but is now just an afterthought to many different people. This site has not had any changes in many years. Myspace is done for good and probably will not make a return in the social media (despite some celebrity attempts from people such as Justin Timberlake to revive it).

Flickr: Flickr is a social media web site that allows people to share photos and comment on others photos. The number of users for Flickr is rapidly decreasing.  One reason for this is that social media sites like Instagram are quickly becoming more popular for photo sharing.

Kik Messenger: Kik Messenger is an app in which users are able to send pictures and receive  pictures rom other users. I believe the reason for this is that the people who do know about KiK really don’t use it as much.

Sites that are Soaring

Twitter:  Over the last year, Twitter has moved up in the ranks of being in the top five most used social media sites because there are many different things to do on Twitter. For example, Tweeting to a celebrity and having them retweet it is awesome. Also being able to follow your favorite artist, musician, or other high profile person is pretty cool too.

Instagram: On Instagram, you’re able to create an account and take pictures of anything you desire then add a filter (if you like) and the pictures up onto your profile. This allows people to like your pictures and also gives people the ability to follow their friends or co-workers.

Vine: Vine is a social media site in which users are able to create their own videos and post them for other people to watch. They are no more than 6 seconds in length. You can like videos that our friends post as well. I believe that Vine is becoming more and more popular because people today love posting videos of them and their friends for entertainment purposes. Comedians, especially, have embraced this new form of social media for some pretty hilarious videos.
