Marcus Mariota: Will he be a Philadelphia Eagle?

Marcus Mariota: Will he be a Philadelphia Eagle?

With the 2015 NFL draft on Thursday in Chicago this year, the biggest question on Eagles fans minds is whether or not. Will Chip Kelly walk away from the first round with Marcus Mariota. As a fan I have been calling for the Eagles to get Marcus Mariota since last year (Mariota ended up not coming out for the draft).

Marcus and Chip go way back to Chip’s days in Oregon when he coached the Ducks in college football. There is no doubt that he will be a great fit in Chip offense ( as he was in college when he played under Chip Kelly) and could be that piece to send the Eagles to the Super Bowl and possibly even win it. The only problem is, how will Chip get him.

Kelly  has already said he “will not mortgage the future for one guy” in a press conference two months.  Is it really mortgaging the future if you believe you have a quarterback that can send you to multiple Super Bowls in your system?

Here’s how Kelly would have to do it is like this:

1.Trade Sam Bradford to the Browns for the 19th pick. This sets the Eagles up with two fist round picks this year that will help a lot in getting this deal done.

2. Kelly willing to trade a couple more 2nd or 3rd round picks. Yes it is tough to give up another 2nd round pick or a 3rd but, Marcus really is worth it.

3. Kelly has to give up Mychal Kendricks. First off Kendricks would not even be a starter on our team this year if we don’t trade him. They like Demeco Ryans a lot more than Kendricks. Kendricks alone would only bring in a 2nd or 3rd round pick so he has to be in this trade.

4. Give up Fletcher Cox. If this deal is going to be done, we have to give Fletcher Cox. Yes he arguably should of been in the NFL Pro Bowl last year and was the best defensive player on the team. He is such a great player and he is the key in getting this deal done. Do I want to give up Cox? Absolutely not. Am I willing to give him up for Mariota? In a heartbeat.

Mariota is the exact quarterback Kelly needs in his system to succeed. Look what he did just with Nick Foles who doesn’t even fit the type of scheme he runs. Kelly with Nick Foles as his starting quarterback went 14-4. That is great for someone as slow and un-athletic type of player like Foles really was.

Mariota is the biggest missing piece for Chip Kelly’s puzzle. If he can some how put this trade together The sky is the limit for this team, Mariota, and Kelly’s success in Philly. I do believe that Sam Bradford can run this offense (since he ran the spread high paced offense in Oklahoma) but, I believe he is more of a risk than Mariota is.

Bradford has two ACL tears in two years and has been below average every year except his last year on the field. To his defense he did not have many good targets to throw too and an awful offensive line. The Rams organization did an awful job building around him and that is why he took such a beating he did and why he is always getting so injured. As a fan I can put my trust in Sam Bradford but, is he good enough to go out there and win a Super Bowl for Philly. I don’t believe so. His skill set is there but, this was a guy that was contemplating retirement before we traded for him.

If we are able to get Mariota fans cannot just expect him to be a rookie and in the Super Bowl right off the bat. That has never been done in NFL history. Eagles fans need to be patient and also build around Mariota too. We have the pieces to make the playoffs right off the bat but, it may take a year or two to become a real contender for the Super Bowl.

Mariota is even more dangerous out of the pocket than inside the pocket. That is what Chips type of offensive style was made for. The sky is the limit for Mariota if Chip is able to get him on Thursday. As an Eagle fan, I have never been so excited for a draft in my entire life. The lead up and all the rumors are driving Philly fans nuts.
