DeflateGate: How it Effects Brady and the Patriots in the Past, Present, and the Future

The New England Patriots, one of the most controversial team in NFL’s history. It seems like they are always trying to gain an unfair advantage against the opposition. You know how the old saying goes  though, “If you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying.” But is this really cheating. All it is is Brady getting the ball to how he likes to hold it. Aaron Rodgers came out and said he liked the ball “over-inflated.” The Patriots were fined a record 1 million dollars, Brady was suspend for the first four games (which will most likely be cut down to two or even none), and a loss of next years 1st round pick and a fourth round pick in 2017.

In reality all teams mess with the ball and get it to their likings. The Patriots got caught because the Colts were sore losers. The refs also found out that 3 out of the 4 Colts balls were under inflated as well. Why were there no penalties with them. The sole reason Tom Brady got suspended is because he wouldn’t “cooperate” by sending his phone to the league. If someone asked for your phone would you give it to them? Absolutely not. Tom doesn’t want the NFL seeing his personal messages from people. What if his super-model wife Giselle (who is a 100 million dollar business) sent him some inappropriate photos for his eyes only? Tom would’t want anyone seeing that and could you really blame him?

The analogy that comes to mind for me in this dilemma is like taking a standardized test. The test is meant to be done in NO.2 pencil but Tom Brady took the test in a NO.1 pencil. He scored really high but, since it was done in NO.1 pencil he gets penalized for it. Yes it does make the ball easier to catch but, on the flip side the ball travels a lot slower as well. In a league where it takes a millisecond to make the biggest difference of the game that is big. The Patriots live on short passes (as seen in the Super Bowl when Tom Brady dissected the Seahawks) and when air is taking out of the ball it travels slower thus getting to the receiver on a quick route slower. Also, if the ball is easier to catch when deflated wouldn’t it help the defensive backs on the other team as well? It makes it easier for them to jump the route (since the ball is traveling slower) and for them to catch the football.

In my opinion it doesn’t give the Patriots an unfair advantage. All teams do things to the ball to get it ready for game day. The Vikings were fined for heating up balls in an oven, the Titans had stickum(illegal substance used to make the ball easier to catch) on the towels to wipe the ball, Eli Manning said he “beats the balls up” to get them warmed up for game day, and much much more goes on. The reason why the Patriots got caught.. SUCCESS. No matter who you are and how much success there is always going to be someone wanting to drag you down. Everyone that ins’t a Patriots fan hates the Patriots and Tom Brady. Even the NFL hates the Patriots! They are the most hated football team in america. It is fun to hate Brady. He has a beautiful wife, all the money in the world, the best Quaterback of All Time, and walks around like he knows all this stuff. He’s a very cocky guy. Honestly who doesn’t hate this guy? He has everything you want and can’t have in life. This makes him an easy target and is why I believe everyone is against Brady and the Patriots.

I dislike when people compare off the field suspensions with on the field. It really is like comparing apples to oranges. How do you measure cheating on the field with beating up your wife. This isn’t math there is no equation for it. That is why i don’t believe it is fair to judge what Brady got (4 game suspension) to something like what Ray Rice got (2 game suspension.) I do believe it is ridiculous that if you want to give a person a 4 game suspension in the NFL, you have to give them initially an 8 because they will win their appeal. The system the NFL has is awful. Most of the blame has to go on Roger Goodell.

I see flaws with both sides (New England Patriots and the NFL’s side.) I believe the Well’s report does not have enough evidence against the Patriots and Brady to be able to suspend Brady 4 games and to take that additional 4th round pick in 2017. Now on the side of the NFL, if the patriots didn’t do anything, then why did they suspend Jim McNally who is an employee of the Patriots that works in the locker room. John Jastremski, the assistant equipment manager was also suspended. Now the NFL wants to know why they are suspended. It looks shady doesn’t it? When a college team knows they are under investigation by the NCAA they usually will suspend someone so they just get a “slap on the wrist” and they will not take a harsh penalty. Did the Patriots think they would get a small fine and that is it? If that was their mindset, then they were 100% wrong. Goodell and the NFL came down hard on them which you really can’t blame them for. They did go a little to hard but, I believe a lot of  this came down to their prior accusations (SpyGate which was used to win the 2004 Super Bowl against the Eagles.)

In a recent poll taken, more people are against the Patriots than they are with them. I do not believe that this ruins Tom Brady’s legacy what-so-ever but, if information comes out, I do believe people will judge him more harshly thus making his legacy and the New England Patriots dynasty diminish.
