More compensation for student athletes?

It seems like time and time again that the topic comes up wether or not that NCAA student athletes should be compensated more for their efforts. In the news now, student athletes are starting to unionize and demand they get more benefits. Some student athletes have complained about how they have been going hungry. One of the biggest demand is to get three free meals a day to keep from going hungry. To me, that sounds like a pretty fare deal compared to what most student athletes want, which is money.

National Champion UConn point guard Shabazz Napier has been one of the leading spokesman for the unionization and demand for more meals. “I shouldn’t have to worry about wether i have enough money to eat when my main focus is on my game, and my studies. Napier said

Northwestern University is the first and most notable for their efforts to unionize their student athletes. Last week ruling by a national relations board of director in Chicago said “Northwestern football players on full scholarships are employees of the University and bare the right to form a union.”

For the NCAA, this is not the first time that students have tried to get more “bang for their buck.” Some players and fans want to start seeing the athletes begin to receive actual payment. These athletes believe that there is no difference between what they do compared to the NBA. Both organizations having practices every day, games every week, and the student athletes also having to worry about school and grades.

It is hard to ignore the demands of student athletes that rake in about 16 billion dollars a year for their schools. I believe that these students demands be met due to the extreme contribution they give to their schools. If not, athletes may refuse to play for their schools and for them, that might mean a end to their scholarships so it would be a lose lose situation. There is no avoiding the outcries of the student athletes and the more the administration puts it off, the louder the cries will be.
