Diversity Club speaker encourages students to find similarities, embrace differences

Ivette Guillermo-McGahee, founder and Executive Director of Allies in Caring in Hammonton, served as the guest speaker and discussion facilitator at the most recent Diversity Club meeting on Wednesday, March 30. Guillermo-McGahee facilitated a discussion that encouraged club members to seek the similarities that exist between each other, not just the differences.  Students were challenged to look outside of their social circles in order to make meaningful connections to others to others. Club members also reflected on practical ways to achieve this both in and out of the classroom.

The Diversity Club, advised by English teacher Audrey Griess, includes people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. The club provides support and increases school awareness of Hammonton High School’s unique student culture while seeking to create an environment that celebrates diversity.
