Conflicts between Russia and Ukraine are not over. Europe steps in to avoid any further escalations of the conflict, and to calm the climate of cold war started during the summer.  After the embargo and the sanctions imposed to Russia, the conflicts seemed to have calmed down.  30% of the Natural Gas sources in Europe are provided by Russia, and the approaching of the winter puts pressure on the Union to promote peace talks.

Putin and Poroshenko had the first of many talks in Milan Oct. 17.  The presence of the European leaders Merkel, Renzi, Cameron and Hollande created some tensions on the Russian side, especially the presence of the German chancellor stiffened the Kremlin, making almost impossible to find a common ground on each of the points discussed.

Both sides declare themselves as not satisfied from the meeting because “full of misunderstandings”. Moscow also declared that the Europe seems to be a partisan judge pushing Dmitry Peskov to state that the climate was “Absolutely biased, non-flexible, non-diplomatic.”

Putin declared a not “too constructive mood” especially after his speech about the legitimacy of the rebels to consider themselves Russian, and Merkel replying that the 1994 Budapest Agreement states that Russia recognizes the existence and legitimacy of Ukraine and Crimea.

Russia proposes to offers to re-open the gas lines, as long as Europe helps Ukraine to pay off its $4.5 billion debt, and also asks for a removal of the sanctions imposed by the USA and the European Union.  Europe decides to keep the sanctions active until Moscow will provide more proof of the end of the conflict, on the other hand, the Union lets Ukraine borrow $2 billion to start paying the debt. Moscow assures its Natural Gas for at least the whole winter.

Kiev claims a Russian involvement in providing weapons and arms to the rebellion, the Kremlin denies any kind of involvement, but declares to sustain the rebels’ ideals.  Europe sympathizes with the Ukraine’s side and seems to protect its interest. By doing this it is settled a continuation of the talks in Brussels in Tuesday Oct. 21.

Another resolution is found by adding Ukraine, Russia and Italy in providing drones to control the border.  Previously only France, Germany and England had provided the drones already used in Afghanistan with the NATO forces.

The end of talks in Milan results in an escalation of the conflict in Donetsk, the center of the rebellion. Several shots were fired and government forces had to take precautions in order to lose control of the situation.  The rebels attacked the Donetsk airport, and it was thanks to the well prepared Ukrainian forces that the attack was prevented.

Fighting simmers between the rebels, the rebels’ threats had increased since the Milan talks, and it has recently been possible to have proof of the Russian involvement in furnishing weaponry and arms to the rebels.  Two charred tanks were found after that an attack was rejected. The two tanks were T-72BM and T-72B1, two models used solely by the soviet forces. Along with the tanks, the Ukrainian army found several other weapons produced by Russian forces. This doubtlessly gives credit to Poroshenko’s claim that the separatist were helped by external forces, in particular Russia.

This new crisis has pushed the relations between Russia and the west to a new low, and a lot of work will be needed to promote channels of cooperation and support between the two forces.
