A Balancing Act: SLE helps students balance work and school

As a high school student, you have a lot on your plate. You have homework, tests and quizzes to study for, and many students have jobs as well. While the reasoning behind having a job may differ for each student, whether it be to pay for a car, phone, help parents with bills, or even just to have money they all have the same problem. The constant balancing act of work and school.

Belive it or not Hammonton High School has a soltuion for this common problem. They have the S.L.E. program. This program is ran by Mr. Richard Cote and is designed to give students everything they need in order to be succesfull in the world of work. In this class, students learn many different things. They learn how to create a professional resume, properly conduct an interview, managing a business, and everything in between.

Students can potentially earn 15 credits for completing this class. 10 credits for their performance at work and 5 for the classwork, projects, and tests. Obviously Mr. Cote is not able to be at each student’s job every day to watch them. Instead, he visits each student’s work place twice a month to drop off a progress report and to talk to thier manager. The progress report gives the employer a chance to explain how you’ve been doing at work and allows Mr. Cote to keep track of your performance at work. To track student’s hours the paystub from each paycheck is filed in each individuals file.

I myself took advantage of this great oppurtunity and would highly recommend it to upcoming seniors. The prgoram relivies a lot of stress from trying to balance both work and school. It allows you to leave school early and go to work. This gives you an advantgae because most employers need people to work day shifts. I was able to pick up more hours, make more money, and not be out all night working and having to worry about not being able to get up the next morning. Along with working I learned a lot of crucial life skills in the class.
