Music Review: The Vamps

Four very talented young boys from the UK started a band together in 2012.  Brad Simpson, James McVey, Tristan Evans and Connor Ball create popular band The Vamps.

These boys met through social media and were an instant hit, they gained followers through YouTube by playing covers of popular bands such as The Killers, One Direction, and Taylor Swift.  James was an acoustic hound who played pop music.  He was inspired to create a group to play with him.  He scoured YouTube for other artists to join him.

First one in his list was Brad Simpson.  “His voice was very different from other people.” said McVey.  After being asked to join the band Brad said “I think it’s very lonely being a solo artist.”  He was more than happy to Join McVey in his quest for the next members of The Vamps.

Tristan Evans was next; his friend request through Facebook to McVey was his step into the band.  McVey and Simpson were intrigue about the fact Evans was one of the top three drummers in the U.K. Evans started playing drums when he was seven, “I was an extremely hyperactive child,” said Evans. “Drumming was a way I channeled my energy.”

The final artist to join the group was Connor Ball. He was born in Scotland and started playing guitar and singing at the age of 12. He learned how to play bass just to be in the band. “Connor is like Yoda.” Says McVey. “He’s kind of quiet, but what he says is wise.”

The boys were inspired by their own styles of music. McVey was inspired by bands like the Arctic Monkeys and Good Charlotte but Evans’ preference leaned more towards AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.

According to press release provided by their record lable, McVey describes their music as “A bit naughty”.  “Some of the songs are a bit provocative” McVey continues, “To me the music has an indie twist.”  They enjoy playing their music in order to show that their music has substance. “

The message of The Vamps is to show people that we are four young musicians who started in a garage and are now having this amazing adventure,” says Ball. “We want everyone who comes t our shows to leave feeling like they had an awesome time!”
